Assalammu'alaikum,
Once upon a time, a farmer discovered a large snake in his house. Frightened, he was about to fetch an axe to kill it to protect his wife, son, and the sheep that nourished his family. But just as he was about to act, he discovered a golden egg beneath the snake.
The farmer was elated and told his wife, "Let's postpone killing the snake. We can gather more golden eggs, become wealthy, and live happily!" He securely closed the door, ensuring the snake couldn't escape. Every day, he would open the door, retrieve the golden egg, and his wealth started to grow.
One day, he forgot to close the door, and the snake bit the sheep. Waking up to find the dead sheep, he decided to kill the snake. But a voice in his mind urged him to let it live a few more days to collect more golden eggs. He thought, "It's okay, I have plenty of money to buy thousands of sheep." He then started closing the door again before going to sleep.
One morning, he woke to find his son dead from a snake bite. Grief-stricken and full of regret, he lamented, "If only I had killed the snake before this happened!" Again, the voice echoed, persuading him to let the snake live for the golden eggs. His son was gone, and nothing could change that. So, he continued his routine, collecting gold while living with his wife.
Then, on one tragic morning, he found his wife dead next to him. The snake had bitten her. He was devastated and cried out, "Woe is me! The snake killed my wife." He looked around his room, filled with gold, and realized, "Now that the snake has taken my son, my wife, and my sheep, what good is all this gold? What can this wealth do for me now?"
In despair, he cried out, "I don't want the gold! I don't want the wealth! I want my son, my wife, my sheep back!" He then quickly took up his axe to kill the snake, regretting not taking the decisive action when he first had the chance.
This parable serves as a reminder of the real cost of procrastination. Sometimes, we prioritize temporary gains and delay actions that are necessary for our overall well-being.
And the reason why we procrastinate? It's because we're chasing the golden egg in our lives. The golden egg can be that career or business that keeps us busy from our spiritual, physical, and family well-being. OR the endless entertainment and scrolling on our phones that keep us from being focused and pursuing meaningful pursuits.
If we don't end up killing the snake and the root cause of our procrastination, we might wake up one day regretting that we lost all that was very important to us.
Don't wait till it's too late, beat procrastination today.
